K9 Officer Tango
October 10, 2002 - January 13, 2012

K9 Tango passed away peacefully with his partner and best friend, Officer Jon Weiner, at his side.  Tango had been battling cancer for the last month and his condition deteriorated quickly.  Tango was an excellent partner and friend.  He was one of our protectors and a community Hero.

Patrolman Jon Weiner & K9 Tango had an amazing career together.  Tango excelled at locating drugs, tracking and protecting his partner.

Tango had countless drug finds.  On one find, he located a large amount of crack cocaine and a handgun hidden under a dashboard in a vehicle.  On another, he located more than $15,000 in drug money on a traffic stop.

Tango did random drug sniffs at Kenston and other schools to help keep our children safe and schools drug free.  he also enjoyed visiting the kids at school events, events around town and made a regular appearance at Red Ribbon Week.

Tango loved tracking the bad guys.  After a resident on Brigadoon heard someone break into their home and called 911, Officer Weiner and Tango arrived and tracked the suspect for more than a mile through heavy brush.  Eventually, Tango alerted to the suspect hiding in the brush.  The suspect surrendered without incident.

Officer Weiner and K9 Tango aided the Geauga County Sheriiff Deputies on many occasions.  They responded to a request to assist in a search for a suspect who had led deputies on a high speed pursuit.  The suspect had crashed his motorcycle and fled the scene.  upon arrival, K9 Tango began tracking the suspect into the backyard of a nearby residence where he located the visor of a motorcycle helmet.  Tango continued tracking to another residence where he located the helmet under the deck.  Tango then began tracking through the backyard into a wooded area where officers heard the suspect call out "I give up...don't send the dog!"  The suspect was taken into custody without incident. 

Officer Weiner and K9 Tango responded to a call to assist another officer in the search for two suspects who had fled on foot from a vehicle after being stopped in an area known for drug trafficking.  K9 Tango began tracking the suspects behind the GMHA units and led officers to the back yard of a home.  Tango alerted to a pile of brush behind the garage of the home.  One suspect was located hiding under the brush and he was taken into custody without incident.  Officers and Tango began to search for the second suspect.  Tango tracked down another street to abandoned railroad tracks.  He tracked down the railroad tracks, through a drainage ditch and out onto another street.  Tango led officer to the front door of a home where the second suspect was located and also taken into custody
.
Tango proved early on in their partnership that he would unconditionally protect his partner.  On patrol, Officer Weiner saw a suspect stealing mail out of mailboxes.  When he confronted the suspect, the male suspect assaulted Officer Weiner by punching him in the face and rendering him immobile for a moment.  In that moment, Tango jumped to action, chased the suspect and took him down.  The suspect was taken into custody.

We are fortunate to have had Tango watching over our community.  He will be greatly missed as our protector and our friend! God Bless Jon & His Family.
